One of our partner churches, Bethel Lutheran in Gurnee, hosted a Back-to-School clothing distribution in August. Volunteers from the church brought the clothing to their gym where others set up the ‘store’. Love INC families were invited to shop for their children and themselves.

Over three days, 50 servants shared 308 hours serving 47 families totaling 191 individuals. They distributed countless items of clothing, coats, & shoes, about 45 backpacks full of school supplies, dozens of bags of books from Bernie’s Book Bank and, most importantly, many prayers, hugs and kind words.

These servants were living Christ’s command: “I needed clothes and you clothed me” Matthew 25:36 (NIV)

Love Story: Sparkly Shoes!

After the first day of clothing distribution we noticed that many of the young girls clothes were running low. We sent out an appeal to the church and had a great response, with several people bringing in beautiful children’s clothes to replenish the racks.
The next morning, two sisters arrived to shop with their families. They had separate appointments, so one sister and her family went in first. They both had 5-year old daughters who were so close that they called each other “sisters”, instead of “cousins”. The daughter from the first family came running out to show her cousin the shoes she found: sparkling tennis shoes that lit up when you walked. The eyes of second five-year old told us that she really hoped she could get some too. Our hearts sank because we knew there was only one pair. Her mother was very supportive, saying, “she needs to understand that not everything is equal.”

In the meantime, a church member showed up with a large bag of clothing and began to sort and put the clothing on the tables. I took the second family into to gym, prayed with them, and they began to shop. The volunteer sorting clothes turned to me and said, “I have some shoes, where should I put them?” I looked at the shoes, and they were the SAME sparkling tennis shoes. “I know just where to put them!” I walked ten feet over and sat down with the young lady. Her eyes lit up more than the shoes – they fit perfectly!

Ours is a ‘just in time’ God!
